Abstract: From the first moment in history, when it was perceived until today, it was shown that there is no cure for Diabetes Mellitus (DM), but control of its deleterious effects. The progress achieved to reduce the impact this disease has been very broad, particularly in the second half of the twentieth century when various types of diabetes, among them type 1 type 2, were differentiated. This trait of fatalism about the healing of DM has boosted the many researches to be carried out, focusing in recent years on factors that were previously unsuspected, including highlighting the environmental, since several studies have indicated a possible connection between the DM1 and vitamin D, because of its role in the activation of genes involved in several biological functions. Consequently, progress has been made in the interpretation of the function of UV radiation in the metabolic process of this vitamin because the individual must receive direct sunlight on the skin for its synthesis to occur. Therefore, began to be investigated the solar UV radiation axis at various latitudes of the planet and DM1, whereas the vast majority of the research sought to correlate the incidence of DM1 and latitude and in locations with lower incidence of UV rays, further away from the equator. Only three studies focused on the relationship DM1 and vitamin D in sunny regions. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum vitamin D (under the nutritional status of vitamin D and sun exposure) and control of DM1 in patients with this pathology, residents in the city of Maceió (Alagoas). We tested the hypothesis that the nutritional status sufficient in vitamin D is associated with better control of DM1. Methodologically it was proceeded in two dimensions, the first being a review of the literature has allowed to present the theoretical foundations of the chosen theme, and in the second, in the original article are presented research findings of 19 patients with DM1, residents in the city of Maceió (a sunny region, latitude 9º37'57"S), aged ≤ 14 years, to see if there is a relationship between the control of DM1 and sufficient nutritional status vitamin D. It was not possible to confirm the hypothesis. We conclude that further studies should consider methodological changes in research instrument, the type of study and the role of children themselves in data collection.
