O espaço social em “vidas secas” de Graciliano Ramos

Abstract

The present work discusses the social space and literary representations in the novel Vidas secas, by Graciliano Ramos. The research also analyzes that in the face of the northeastern peasant class of the first half of the twentieth century, the figure of the subaltern appears in the novel, still without a voice in modern literature. The objective of the research is to understand the spatial meaning through the writing of Graciliano Ramos, analyzing the representation of the difficult and suffering life of Fabiano and his family, devastated by drought, whose space deepens the coexistence in the common life of the characters. The methodology is based on the analysis of the social space that forms the understanding between the environment and the action of the characters in the novel. It was based on a bibliographic study, of qualitative method, coined in literary theorists such as Candido (2006, 2011), Blanchot (1987), Lins (1976), Bueno (2006) and Simioni (2013), who discuss and study the novels of Graciliano Ramos, the literary space and the relationship between literature and literary form. In order to obtain such results in which the space of the Sertão reflects a social role in the narrative, research was developed on the process of consolidation of Modernism in Brazil and its impacts on national literature, especially in the Novel of 30, in which they were decisive to discuss social themes of the Northeast. Finally, it is concluded that the work was extremely relevant because it evidences the author and literary form of modernism of the 30s, marked by the representation of an underdeveloped Brazil and marked by evident cultural, social and economic differences.
