Abstract: Soybean is a crop of great economic importance worldwide, used for human and animal food, and also for the production of biofuel. Water deficit is the main limiting factor for the productivity of this crop worldwide. Alternatives to minimize the impacts of water deficit in plants involve the application of plant bioregulators, among which, the Brassinosteroids stand out. Because of this, the objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of the bioregulator 24-epibrassinolide in soybean plants (Glycine Max (L.) Merrill), submitted to water deficit stress, with the aim of contributing to the increase in soybean yield. The experiment was conducted in a 2x2 factorial design, with 8 repetitions. The treatments consisted of applying or not the regulator at a concentration of 0.1 mg/L, as well as the presence or absence of water stress. The soybean seeds of the cv. IMA 84114 RR were sown and after twelve days of the first foliar application of the bioregulator was made, which was repeated three more times at intervals of five days. The experiment was conducted in the vegetative phase, and water suppression was imposed on the twenty-seventh day after sowing (DAS). The maximum period of water deficiency was determined by the wilting of soybean plants, followed by three days of rehydration. The data of the parameters evaluated in the experiment were submitted to variance analysis at 0.1, 1 and 5% probability using the F test, and, when statistically significant differences were observed, the Tukey test was used to compare means. In severe water stress, at 32 DAS, the plants in the "Water deficit - 24EpiBL" treatment showed photosynthetic rates below 0.80 μmol CO2 m-2 s-1,while those in the "Water deficit + 24EpiBL" treatment showed values close to 4 μmol CO2 m-2 s-1. The application of 24EpiBL in plants subjected to water deficit conferred better performance in instantaneous efficiency (A/E) as well as in intrinsic water use efficiency (A/gs). The lowest leaf water potentials recorded at 4 am and 12 noon were those of soybean plants from the "DH - 24EpiBL" treatment. On the other hand, the potential photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) at noon was higher in plants from the "DH + 24EpiBL" treatment throughout the evaluation period. In addition, soybean plants that received the application of this bioregulator showed greater heights, leaf areas, weights and grain sizes, as well as higher dry matter yields. Thus, the foliar application of 24-EpiBL in the vegetative phase alleviates the harmful effects of water deficit on gas exchange, improves the hydric status of the plant, as well as assists in the maintenance of photosynthetic pigments, reducing the damage caused by water deficit to the photosynthetic apparatus. Furthermore, after rehydration of the plants, 24-EpiBL improves the growth, development and consequently the productivity of the soybean crop.
