Alfabetização em ambiente hospitalar: uma experiência pedagógica no Hospital Universitário Professor Alberto Antunes

Abstract

Literacy and reading comprehension are fundamental processes for human development,as they form the basis for the full exercise of citizenship and social and economic advancement. However, many hospitalized children and students face barriers to accessing education due to illiteracy, low literacy levels, and intermittent interruptions of school activities. This study aims to reflect on the importance of literacy in a hospital setting, highlighting the need to ensure the continuity of the educational process for children and students undergoing health treatment. The theoretical framework was based on the studies and research of Magda Soares (2005), Mattos and Mugiatti (2011), and the normative documents governing education in hospital settings (Brazil, 1988; 1994; 2002; 2018). For this study, a qualitative, descriptive approach was adopted with an emphasis on case study, seeking to explore the research objective in detail. The analysis of the data addressed literacy practices carried out with a hospitalized child undergoing treatment for nephrotic syndrome, who participated in educational activities offered by an extension project. The results highlighted the importance of literacy and guaranteeing the right to education for hospitalized children and students as a mechanism that eliminates the risk of death, restores dignity, and invests in social justice. Education in hospitals is a promotion of the right to life, in addition to contributing to the integral development and learning of children and students undergoing medical treatment in the hospital environment.
