Abstract: This paper aims to identify and analyze what is meant by polygamy from the study of the context of the tsonga societies of Mozambique and the mbundo of Angola, addressing the link between it and the social, cultural and traditional issues of these groups that have in common both the fact that they have the linguistic trunk of Bantu origin as having been colonized by Portuguese. We will start from the analysis of the period from 1910 to 1965, which takes place in the transition from an Imperial Portugal to a Portuguese Republic. In this section we will observe how the polygamous practice suffered several losses on the part of the missionaries and the Portuguese Republic in a great attempt to remove it of local culture through the implementation of a new model of social organization based on European precepts; we will take into account the fact that even during the Republic the laws and orders established during the Empire were not eliminated, or ignored, but renamed and reused, going from the implantation of the catholic religion and the monogamous practice; the building of churches, baptism, conversion and marriage; school education as a project to obtain manpower to be used as main tools to impair the permanence of polygamy. As a source we will use the works of some authors such as, Pierre Bourdieu 1999, Norbert Elias 1994, Michael Foucault 1979, Jhon Iliffe 1999, Henri Junod 1996, David Birmingham 1946, Adu Boahen 1985, Paul Lovejoy 2002, Joseph Miller 1995, John Thornton 2004; as well as the sources of the Bulletin of the General Agency of the Colonies, the Quarterly Documentation of Mozambique and the Colonial Cadernos, available on the website of Memória África as well as of Decree Law nº 35.461 of 1946, Decree Law nº 30.615 of 1940, Portuguese Political Constitution of 1911 , Portuguese Political Constitution of 1933, Portuguese Political Constitution of 1940 and the Colonial Act of 1933. In this sense, we opted for an interdisciplinary approach that promotes the dialogue between works and sources from the interpretation of what was described in both and what was hidden in their lines. Intending to perceive with this the conflicts that arise from the clash between tradition, modernity and the Laws that tried to curb the practice of polygamy, but which have not succeeded in eliminating it, and therefore it remains valid within the family environment and the social structures tsongas and mbundos.
