“Das pétalas das flores”: mulheres populares, crimes e honra na capital sergipana (1900-1930)

Abstract

The present work seeks to understand the women’s role from the popular layer in Aracaju city modernization process through the honor processes of the capital. Aracaju, a planned city, comes up with an idea to serve political, economic and social interests. It is through these elements that the transfer of the capital from São Cristóvão to current Aracaju is justified. In this scenario, we will seek to understand the relationships that existed between man and woman, and this one is the popular one, who worked outside the home, black, mixed race, , white, orphan, who could not read or write, who helped in the support of the house was part of this society. Thus, this work contributes to Sergipe's historiography about the discussion of women in the labor market, about female behavior that did not fit the standards and stereotypes that were imposed at the time. The discussion about Aracaju in the early twentieth century made it possible to build a scenario to understand the organization of the city, the daily life the population and leisure spaces. The criminal proceedings, the main source of this work, contributed to understand where the characters were inserted in the capital, where they lived, where they worked and in addition to the reasons and interests in the complaints made. In addition, the newspapers of the time: Gazeta do povo, Jornal Sergipe, O Imperial , contributed to understand the discourses of society, the construction and growth of the capital In addition to these sources, images and maps depicting the Aracaju scenario contributed to understand popular women and their role at work, at home and in society. In view of these issues, the criminal proceedings made it possible to note the growth of the city, the social organization and the popular woman in the city of Aracaju in the early nineteenth century, including the social organization of the period.
