Sherlock Holmes e o Gótico: uma análise do conto detetivesco “The Adventure of the Speckled Band”, de Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle

Abstract

In the present study, I carry out a description of the concepts belonging to the Gothic genre and the detective genre, which seek to base the analysis of the short story "The Adventure of the Speckled Band", by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, published in 1892, the so-called Golden Age of detective productions. Thus, the objective of this article is to highlight and demonstrate how the atmosphere produced by the Gothic elements creates the effect of strangeness in the work in question, emphasizing the mystery that is characteristic of detective works, while that it adds an air of uncertainty to the tale. Thus, to achieve the objectives of the study, I rely on Rossi (2008), Sá (2019), Matias (2013), Murano (2011), among others, as theoretical references. It is possible to conclude, then, that the short story "The Adventure of the Speckled Band” makes use of elements of Gothic literature in a expressive way, influencing, in a way, the reading perspective of the reading public that is captivated by the delicate mixture of genres: detective and gothic.
