Abstract: Introduction: Scientific initiation (CI) is an activity that initiates the undergraduate student in the production of scientific knowledge. This activity usually takes place in higher education institutions. It is through this scientific knowledge that students have the opportunity to develop a critical, ethical, professional sense and to produce knowledge. The university is the most important vehicle to stimulate and encourage research, playing a fundamental role in the development of this activity, requiring the support of the institution and professors, but there are reasons that distance students from this experience of conducting scientific research in university. Objective: Assess whether undergraduates of courses in the health area of two Higher Education Institutions identified here as HEI 1 (public) and HEI 2 (private) have knowledge about the scientific research developed in these educational institutions and what is the engagement rate - Engaged, Not Engaged and Never Engaged. 115 students aged between 18 and 50 years, from public university (79.1%) and a private university (20.9%) participated, with the majority being female (72.4%). Methodology: Data were obtained through an online questionnaire (created on the Google Forms platform) which was made available for students, from March 2020 to January 2021, containing multiple-choice and open-ended questions about scientific research. At the end of the established time, the answers were analyzed quantitatively, using statistical methods of relative and absolute frequency, using the Microsoft Excel 2013 program. Results: It was observed that among the reasons that prevent students from developing scientific research activities, the most cited were to reconcile between the reconciling undergraduate studies and laboratory research, often due to lack of time due to the course load or the need to reconcile studies with the work of students who need to work and study, making their participation in these activities unfeasible extracurriculars that the university offers and we see the need to develop projects that can encourage student engagement and improve the dissemination of scientific research. Conclusion: According to the results obtained, it can be suggested that scientific production in health courses contributes to society, to the student, to the training of the researcher teacher and to professional life.
