Abstract: This work aims to evaluate the monthly rainfall forecasts of South America (AS) using the regional climate model (RegCM4) with different cumulus parameterization schemes, namely: TID (Tietdke), GFC (Grell-Fritsch Lock), EMU (Emanuel) and a mixed convection scheme, EMU on the ocean and GFC on the continent. Five initializations were made for each of the configurations of the RegCM4 model, between the months of February and June, with a forecast period of 6 months forward. For the initial and frontier condition of the model, the operational data of the Climate Forecast System model Version 2 (CFSv2) were used. The evaluations of both RegCM4 and CFSv2 were carried out over the AS region and eight sub-domains: AMZn (North Amazonia), AMZs (Southern Amazonia), NEBn (Northeast Brazilian North), NEBs Brazil and Uruguay), SULDESTE (Southeastern Brazil), ENWPe (Northwest Ecuador and Peru) and CHACHO (Chaco). All predictions were compared with data from the Climate Prection Center, where we performed subjective analyzes of the monthly and objective accumulations of regional averages in subdomains, spatial and regional bias calculations, and Willmott index in each subdomain. The first evaluation of the forecast started in February (rainy season) the results presented a better performance of the EMU-GFC scheme in the first three months of forecast, while in the last three months the EMU scheme. When analyzing the Willmott, bias and regional averages indices, the EMU-GFC scheme showed better agreement in the sub-domains AMZn and AMZs, GFC in NEBn, TID in ENWPe, SUR, SULDESTE and CHACO, and the global CFSv2 model in the NEBn. In the second initialization the EMU-GFC, EMU and TID schemes represented the precipitation patterns, with EMU-GFC representing the sub domains AMZn and CHACO, TID the NEBn and NEBs, EMU the AMZs and ENWPe, and GFC the SUR. In the third initialization the TID scheme represented better the spatial pattern of precipitation, while the accumulated ones were well predicted by the scheme EMU and EMU-GFC, in the objective analyzes EMU-GFC represented the subdomains AMZn, NEBs and CHACO, EMU to AMZs, SUR and ENWPe, and TID the NEBn and SOUTHWEST. In the fourth initiation the subjective evaluation showed that the TID scheme predicted better the precipitation patterns of up to 100 mm / month in the driest months (June to September), but in the other months EMU and EMU-GFC had better predictions of accumulations of 200 mm /month. In the objective analyzes the EMU-GFC scheme represented the subdomains AMZn, NEBn and NEBs, EMU the AMZs and SOUTHWEST, GFC the SUR and CHACO, and TID the ENWPe. In the fifth and last initialization in May, the results show in the subjective analyzes that the EMU scheme had a better representation of CPC data, especially in July, August, September and October, with a better prediction of rainfall up to 200 mm / month, presenting bias, while in other months precipitation was not well predicted by regional and global models. When checking the objective analyzes were observed bias predominate between -20 - 20 mm / month, but with underestimation / overestimation at specific sites. In the Willmott regional and index averages analyzes, the EMU-GFC scheme presented well the precipitation in the sub-domains AMZn and NEBs, EMU in the AMZs and SULDESTE, GFC in the SUR, CHACO and NEBn, and TID in the EWNPw. Therefore, with the analyzes carried out, it has been reached that the RegCM4 model significantly improved the predictions using CFSv2 data, but the overall model still shows good results in specific areas.
