Luta territorial dos Kariri-Xocó da Bahia

Abstract

Seeking to understand a little of the reality of traditional peoples, the following work aims to expose the process of deterritorialization of the village Kariri-Xocó, in the municipality of Paulo Afonso-BA, maneuvered by capital and put into practice with the endorsement of the State. In order to discuss such disquietude, the territorial category was approached in the materialist historical-dialectical aspect to understand the relation of power existing between the natives and their land, used as a condition to exist and to be recognized as having the right to own a territory. However, in order to achieve the right, the indigenous respond to the attacks of capital through resistance to the territorial struggle mediated through the territoriality practiced by them, reaffirming the importance of the uniqueness of the indigenous territory for the group. And, it is through the territoriality that the tribe can resist until the moment that there is a favorable decision to return to the territory. The research also shows that not only in this case, but in many others, the high levels of violence against the indigenous are results of what represents the ethnic background of the country, which is increasingly being lagged and neglected by capital and the state acting as instrumentalizer of the spatial segregation of indigenous groups, from the earliest days of the country's territorial formation.
